It’s not Hai-a-ku, it’s ha-i-ku. There are 2 types of Japanese character: one which translates to one English letter (a, i, u, e, o) and one which translates to two (or three, in the cases of shi and chi) English letters (ka, re, yu, wa, etc.). Keep in mind that the 2 letter characters always end in a sound produced by a 1 letter character, (ka ends in a, mu ends in u, etc.). By using powers of deduction, and since the 2 letter characters can’t end in a consonant, it is easy to see that the syllables of haiku would be: Ha – i – ku. Because it couldn’t be Ha – ik – u or H – ai – ku.

The only problem is this haiku is all over the internet. I’ve seen it attributed to William Shatner. I don’t understand why Threadless doesn’t catch these things. They published a George Carlin line someone else submitted, too. Lame.

Ahh, but the haiku in question is in English, so it’s okay. In English, “haiku” only has two syllables.

Well see, I really like this haiku and have a shirt of it, but the fact is that the plural of “haiku” in the Japanese language is “haiku.” Also, in the Japanese language, the word “haiku” is considered to have three syllables. Not to be a downer because it’s very funny.
